Safety Tip – Your car’s headrest could save your life.

With luck, you’ll never be trapped in a car with the need to break the window from the inside, but if you are and don’t have the right tools, your salvation may be right behind your head. The headrest of car seats, if detachable, could be used to break open the glass of a car in case of fire and emergency. This “survival tip” has been around for several years and has been featured in a number of survival blogs suggesting that car headrests are deliberately designed to break windows during emergencies. While it is possible to break a car window with a removable headrest, this is an incidental application of that object rather than a deliberate one. Nonetheless, this safety tip could be just what you need in an emergency!

Here’s how to use your car seat’s headrest to break your car door window:

  • Take your headrest off of the back of the seat.
  • Push one of the pegs from the headrest attachment down into the space where your window retracts, just where the seal is.
  • Jam it down in there a few inches and then pull the headrest towards you. Doing this flexes the window glass laterally and the result is a break – usually at the other end of the window. The car window safety glass will shatter and crumble, falling away from the door. (Automotive glass is built to take significant direct impact, perpendicular to the plane of the glass, but if you flex it or hit it along the edge of the glass, it’s much more fragile.)

This method will work in a pinch or in someone else’s car, but we suggest keeping an emergency hammer and seat belt cutter in the glove compartment or under the passenger seat of your own car in case of emergency too.  Here are couple of good options.

Stay Safe!

MW Patrol Update

Coordinated Efforts Improve Safety in Our Community

We have some important and exciting news regarding the Constable’s Patrol. As of March 1, 2017, we are now coordinating the hours of three deputies with our immediate neighbors to the north, Vermont Commons and Park Commons, as well as our immediate neighbors to the east, WAMM and Audubon Place.

By coordinating our hours with other neighborhoods, we now have constable coverage seven days a week.

In addition to our own deputy, Dan Thomas, our neighborhoods will also be patrolled by deputies, Casey Dobbins and Raymond Garivey.

Deputy Dan Thomas is assigned to the Mandell Winlow Security Foundation contract. Deputy Thomas is a fourteen year veteran of the Constable’s office. Deputy Thomas’ prior experience includes stints at the Texas Department of Corrections and Harris County Sheriff’s Office as an arson investigator. Deputy Thomas is a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a degree in police science. Deputy Thomas has been married for 35 years and has two adult children.

Deputy Casey Dobbin is the deputy assigned the Vermont Commons/Park Commons contract. A former U.S. Marine, Deputy Dobbin joined law enforcement after leaving the military. Over his fourteen year career as a police officer, Deputy Dobbin has served in a variety of patrol, supervisory and administrative roles. Deputy Dobbin takes community service very seriously and desires to become a welcome part of the neighborhoods he patrols. Deputy Dobbin is married and hopes to grow a family with his wife very soon. When not enhancing our safety, Deputy Dobbin enjoys hunting and fishing.

Deputy Raymond Garivey III graduated from the College Of The Mainland Police Academy in December 2015. He has been serving the citizens of Harris County Precinct 1 for over a year. Deputy Garivey is currently assigned to the WAMM/AudobahnPlace contract. Deputy Garivey comes from a law enforcement family and hopes to follow in the same footsteps as his father who is a Captain with the Freeport Police Department. Deputy Garivey was born and raised in Rosenberg, Texas. He enjoy spending his free time with his family and favorite dog, Debo.

Please join us in welcoming all three deputies to the increasing number of Montrose-area neighborhoods that are finding ways to band together to increase safety, security, and crime awareness throughout the greater Montrose area.

Crime Alert – Drug heist by Deputy Lopez

WHAT: Suspicious Person Report results in felony possession arrest

WHERE: Cherryhurst Park

As reported by Deputy Lopez, on 03/04/2017: I was dispatched to a suspicious person at the park located at 2100 Ridgewood (Cherryhurst Park). The reportee stated that a black male and a white female were in the park possibly smoking marijuana. I arrived on scene and observed a black male and a white female sitting at the park bench. As I was walking towards them the female placed an unknown item in her back waistband. I made contact with the subjects and detected a strong smell of burnt marijuana coming from their clothing. I requested identifications from parties. The male was identified and was found to be from California. The female was identified to be from Sulphur Texas. When asked both parties admitted to be smoking marijuana but were unclear on why they were in Houston. The female stated that she had an identification card inside the vehicle. The female was then escorted to her vehicle and as she opened the door I smelled a strong odor or marijuana coming from inside. A search was conducted discovering 4 small bags containing a green leafy substance. In the rear of the vehicle I discovered a cardboard box that was overnighted from Las Vegas to Houston Texas. Inside the box another sealed cardboard box was located sealed. I requested a K9 and HPD K9 unit arrived. The K9 alerted to the box. The box was opened and inside the box six metal containers were discovered with the Label Satiam Pumpkin Spice on the outside.

The containers were found to have a false bottom. Inside the container a vacuumed seal bag was located wrapped in mint paper. The contents were discovered to be Half a Pound of Marijuana in each can totaling approximately 4 pounds of Marijuana. Both subjects were arrested for Felony Possession of Marijuana and transported to Harris County Jail.

We were thrilled to hear this arrest was a direct result of a Suspicious Persons Report from a Cherryhurst resident! Keep your eyes open and don’t hesitate to contact the Constable. Working together is key in keeping our neighborhoods secure

Keep up the good work and be safe,

MWSF
