Make Sure Your Home Security System is Working for You.

The best way to avoid a home break-in is a properly installed home security system, but every system relies on you to make it effective:

  • Arm your system EVERY time you leave the house, no matter how long you intend to be away. Most break-ins happen in a matter of minutes.
  • Place signs in your yard and stickers on your windows. Make it obvious that your home has a security system.
  • An unmonitored system is practically no security at all. To be effective, the intrusion signal must be sent to a monitoring station with the ability to dispatch the Constable or Police. Your alarm must also be permitted by the City of Houston.

Winter’s end brings hope for brighter days and warmer temperatures. Unfortunately, spring also ushers in its own challenges and unique safety issues. There’s a lot more to spring cleaning than vacuuming up the dust mites that accumulated over winter. The fresh start of spring is the best time to ensure your home is safe & prepared for another year.

INSIDE YOUR HOME:

Test the Batteries in Your Smoke Detectors
To verify your smoke detectors are in good working condition, test each one individually.

Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors
You should have a carbon monoxide detector outside every room and on every level of your home, and check the batteries in each one every month.

Check All Door and Window Locks
Make sure everything is working order. If you have Smart locks, check the batteries. For coded locks and/or alarm systems, it may be time to update the security codes.

Review (or Create) Your Family Emergency Plan
Take advantage of the new season by reviewing your disaster preparedness plan with every member of your household and update it to reflect anything that may have changed in the last year. Your plan should include at least two rendezvous points, an emergency contact person, and an evacuation route. Once you have reviewed the plan, run a few drills for the natural disasters that can occur in your area, like fire, flooding, and earthquake.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOME:

Perform a Perimeter Safety Check
Walk outside and thoroughly examine the exterior of your home, including entrances, windows, and the surrounding physical area. Look at your home from a thief’s perspective. What can you see that you would like to steal?

Replace Broken or Burnt Out Light Bulbs
Keeping your property adequately lit is a huge deterrent.
Make Sure Your Landscaping Doesn’t Provide Cover For Burglars

Prune shrubs and trees leading up to the house, and those around windows and doors, closely enough to make it impossible for someone to conceal themselves.

House Numbers Need To Be Clearly Displayed
Ensure that the numbers are visible from the road to assist emergency responders in locating the home in case of an emergency.

Secure Gates & Sheds With Padlocks

Give Your Surveillance Cameras a Thorough Check
Outside surveillance allows you to keep a watchful eye on your home while you are away. Make sure nothing is obscuring the view and that there are no faulty wires.

February 2018 Newsletter

Neighborhoods and communities all around us strive to be safe and enlist the help of the Constable Patrol Program to help ensure that security just as we do. Nonetheless, crimes of opportunity occur everywhere and even though our crime rates have dropped significantly since contracting with the Program we cannot let our guard down. Here are 2 reminders from the Braeswood community that crime is never far away and some tips to ensure your safety.

In the first incident, one of our neighbors left their bank with a couple hundred dollars in cash. They left the cash in the car and a few minutes after arriving home, someone broke into the car and stole the money. It is unlikely that this was a random event and more likely they were followed home from the bank.

In the second incident, a neighbor was parking her car in her driveway about 10:20 pm. As she exited, she spotted a man in the driveway carrying a hammer. She quickly got into the house, called for help and our on-duty deputy and HPD responded. The man was combative and was arrested. Obviously, this situation had the potential to be much worse.

Several ways to avoid being a victim:

  • As we have seen in the news several times in recent weeks, criminals follow us home after shopping or banking. When you leave the bank or ATM, pay attention to who leaves at the same time and watch for someone on your trail. If someone worries you, call 911 and drive to a busy, public place where people are available to help.
  • Before you get in or out of your car, be mindful of what’s happening around you. Look for people or cars that look out of place. Our deputies are eager to check out suspicious people or vehicles that might not belong here.
  • Never leave anything of value visible in your car. That includes phones, charging cables, firearms, backpacks, and packages. Yes, it is a pain to tidy up the car every evening, but our belongings are magnets for thieves.
  • Park high up in your driveway or inside the garage whenever possible. Most vehicle-related crimes happen to cars parked in the street. And ALWAYS lock the doors.

General Update: There was an overall increase in criminal activity for January, compared to the significantly low numbers from November and December. There were 10 HPD reported incidents in our neighborhoods – 4 Thefts from Vehicle, 4 Thefts (3 occurring on Kipling St), 1 Breaking & Entering on Harold St, and 1 Theft of Vehicle. There were 2 Crime Alerts from the Constables office. Click on the map for more detailed information.
